Divisive Pizza toppings

Most of us would think that deciding on what we put on our pizza is pretty simple right?

Wrong.

For some of us it’s a battle of opinions, which can cause tensions between partners, siblings and best mates. It can cause viral debates, and forums to explode to online. Below we look at some of the most hotly debated ingredients for pizza toppings, and try to make the call … do they actually belong on pizza?

Pineapple

We know … the most controversial of all toppings first!

Popular on the most famous Hawaiian pizza, it gives a sweet and zesty zing that its fans go crazy for. It’s luscious and syrupy flavour is like nectar from the gods.

Meanwhile everyone else is wondering who the heck decided fruit belonged on a pizza?

Whether you are a fan or not, pineapple is here to stay. You can’t do a pizza party night without some pineapple thrown in the mix.

Chicken

OK, this one may confuse a few people. Why would chicken be deemed as a decisive ingredient?

There is a school of thought that says the texture and flavour is all wrong for the flavour profile of pizza. Not cooked correctly and you can end up with chunky chewy and even, raw (!) chicken pieces on your pizza.

We believe chicken is amazing though. Oven roasted chook shredded and seasoned on a pizza … who can’t go past it!

Banana

If you are Swedish, you get this. Bananas are awesome, pizza is awesome, therefore they are awesome together … right?

When baked on top of pizza bananas do give a sweet flavour that is loved by many. Some love it with curry, some love it with sugar or caramel for something sweet.

A little unusual, but we believe there is a place for bananas in the pizza topping family.

Anchovies

Tiny little fish of salty death (bias is coming out with this one!).

These really are divisive as people either love them or hate them. These little fish are chock full of salty, savoury and an umami flavour. They are very welcome on real Italian pizzas.

You can slice them in chunks, or mush one finely across a whole pizza. One thing is for sure, you can smell a pizza with anchovy!

We won’t weight in to say if it’s good on pizza, we will leave this for your personal choice.

BBQ Sauce

Apparently those wonderful swirls of BBQ sauce on top of a pizza aren’t for everyone!

This trend only started in 1985, and some people really aren’t on board with it. It’s a step too far from a tomato sauce for traditionalists and they wouldn’t be caught dead with a splosh of this spicy brown goodness on their pizza.

These days it’s a winner for a BBQ Meatlovers, so a winner in our book!

What are your thoughts? Are these toppings a go or a “hell no?”

Is there anything that we missed off the list? We’d love to hear what you think!
